The oval-shaped police officer ran in front of the approaching bus; with one swift gesture of his hand, he brought it to a complete stop. A traffic accident, thought Joan, maybe…that certainly wouldn’t be unusual for the morning rush hour. Like the other passengers, Joan—no longer lost in her novel—peeked out of the window to see what had caused this unscheduled stop.
