The Last Normal Family

Could Bill have done something so despicable? Or is Justine lying? That’s what Colleen has to decide when her daughter, Justine, accuses her father of molesting her.

The Last Normal Family

Colleen wanted to scream. Scream away the shock, scream away the hurt and scream away the terrible truth that something had gone horribly wrong with her family.

Aroused from a sound sleep by angry voices, pleas for understanding and breaking glass, Colleen cautiously pushed open the door to their family room. Bill, still in his robe and pajamas, slapped his daughter across the face. Justine, fully dressed, stumbled backward caressing her jaw. Streams of tears flowed down her cheeks and dangled from her hand before leaping to the floor.

“Bill!” shouted Colleen. Her mouth remained open. They had never hit the girls.

“Mom,” cried Justine. Relieved to see Colleen, Justine wrapped her arms around her mother’s waist.

“What’s going on here?” asked Colleen, diverting her eyes from her husband to her daughter.

Justine spoke first, still clinging to her mother. Bill listened, angrily interrupting Justine several times. The story she told was unbelievable. Bill approached pleading for Colleen to use her common sense. “You know me,” said Bill, his hands extended. “Does this sound like something I would do?”

“Mommy,” said Ashley crying. “Daddy couldn’t have. No! Why Justine? Why are you saying that about Daddy?” In the heat of the commotion, no one had noticed her standing in the doorway. Ashley rushed over to her father, embracing him.

With Bill on one side and Justine on the other, Colleen stood numb between a despicable secret and a disgraceful lie. Either way a tear had occurred in her family and from this moment on, nothing would ever be the same.  A good family was destroyed forever.
