Disclaimer: Based on true events, all the characters in this story are fictional. Any resemblance to any real person is merely coincidental.

The oval-shaped police officer ran in front of the approaching bus; with one swift gesture of his hand, he brought it to a complete stop. A traffic accident, thought Joan, maybe…that certainly wouldn’t be unusual for the morning rush hour. Like the other passengers, Joan—no longer lost in her novel—peeked out of the window to see what had caused this unscheduled stop.

What Joan expected to see were two or more mangled vehicles and angry drivers explaining their side of the story (no doubt blaming each other) to the police. Instead, Joan saw a lone stick-like figure standing on the edge of the bridge surrounded by police, rescuers and gathering onlookers. With the bus less than twenty feet away, Joan, along with the other passengers, had a front row view of the would-be jumper.

She was young—about the same age as Joan’s daughter, who was a freshman in college. The girl on the bridge was tall. She had a long, lean body that waved erratically as she sobbed. She reminded Joan of one of those plastic inflatable figures she’d seen around town positioned in front of a car dealership or a new housing development. Their sole purpose, these colorful characters, was to attract attention. And that’s exactly what this unfortunate creature perched on the wrong side of the bridge railing was doing.

Two local news helicopters hung in the background capturing the live action as it played out below them. Honking horns competed with one another as halted traffic stretched quickly past a mile and continued to grow. The girl, oblivious to it all, wrapped one arm around a narrow pole and leaned toward the dark waters below.
